World Meningitis Day 2011 ( Philippines )

Meningitis is a serious disease that can affect anyone at any age and its impact can last a lifetime. The Philippines , along with other countries celebrated World Meningitis Day last April 24, 2011. To launch this event, PFV (Philippine Foundation for Vaccination) held a press conference last February 2, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila, Quezon City during the PIDSP (Pediatric Infectious Society of the Philippines ) annual convention. It highlighted the need to prevent meningitis and described the complications and burden of the disease.

PPS CONVENTION

Still part of the Meningitis Awareness Campaign,PFV took active participation in the recently concludedannual convention of the Philippine Pediatric Society last April 3-6, 2011 at the PICC, Manila . A booth was dedicated wherein a podcast from the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations Inc ( CoMO ) was continuously played. The video focused on meningococcal disease featuring the experts, survivors and parents from around the world whose lives have been touched by the disease. Banners were put up as well as brochures containing information on meningitis were distributed to >5000 participants. Attendees in the annual convention were also able to meet the experts led by Dr. Lulu Bravo, PFV Executive Director, along with Dr. May Montellano and Dr. Chet Gonzales. They were able to asked vaccine-related questions. 5 winners with the best questions were given book awards and other gifts. It was a fulfilling experience to everyone wherein the participants gained new insights on vaccine preventable diseases especially that of meningococcal meningitis. Meningitis is a menace but if people around the world will work hand and hand, the fight against this dreaded disease is not futile.
